The award ceremony of the 40th International Youngsters' Letter-writing Competition took place on October 9 in Beijing's Jingshan School.

Fourteen-year-old Wang Sa from Keqiao Experimental Middle School in Shaoxing County, east China's Zhejiang Province, won the golden prize for his Story of Two Villages. This marked the fifth time a Chinese student won the top prize.

The theme of this year's competition is "If you were a tree in the forest". More than two million teenagers from more than 60 Universal Postal Union (UPU) member states took part in the competition. Wang's story of the two villages stood out for its expression of the importance of forest protection.

The annual competition was inaugurated in 1971 by the UPU and UNESCO. It invites articles written by young people under the age of 15 in 190-plus UPU member states. China began participating in the competition in 1981 and has won the most golden prizes.

In 2012, the competition will be held in London. Next year's theme is "Write a letter to an athlete or sports star you admire and tell him or her what the Olympic Games mean to you". The closing date for submissions is April 30, 2012.
