An opening ceremony was held at the National Olympic Sports Center in Beijing on June 29 to celebrate the official kick-off of the Fourth National Sports Meeting for Employees from Central Governmental Bodies.
At the launch ceremony, Vice Premier of the State Council Zhang Gaoli, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), announced the start of the games.
Meanwhile, State Councilor Yang Jing addressed the opening ceremony, saying that "Sports and the people's health have long been a focus of the Communist Party and the government. The event is a key part of our drive to mobilize all Chinese people to exercise and unite government employees."
Yang expressed his hope that the games would help encourage more government employees to voluntarily boost their physical health.
This year's games will see more than 10,000 contestants competing in 13 categories, including cycling, tennis and ping-pong, from June to September.
For its part, the China Post Group has sent a total of 170 staff members to compete for honors on behalf of the enterprise in 10 sporting games at the event, including ping-pong, bridge, calisthenics and tennis.
Those in attendance at the launch ceremony also included Vice-President and Member of the CPC Committee of China Post Group Liu Mingguang.
