|The 16th Asian Games kicked off on November 12, 2010, in Guangzhou, capital of southern China's Guangdong Province. A total of 476 events in 42 sports were set for athletes from around Asia. |
Of the events, badminton and Wushu (martial arts) are particularly popular in China. The modern form of badminton emerged in 1860 in England, and after it was introduced into China in the early 20th century, the sport gradually gained popularity among the masses. Wushu, as a modern sport that evolved from ancient Chinese arts of self-defense and now enjoys a great following worldwide, became a formal competitive event at the Beijing Asian Games in 1990. During the Guangzhou Asian Games, badminton and Wushu competitions were held at Tianhe Gymnasium and Nansha Gymnasium, respectively.
