To enhance the global understanding of the Chinese language and culture, develop friendship between China and other countries, and promote multiculturalism around the world, the Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters) has established Confucius Institutes overseas since 2004. Confucius Institutes are non-profit organizations that aim to teach the Chinese language and spread Chinese culture. By 2012, a total of 400 Confucius Institutes and over 500 Confucius Classrooms have been set up in 108 countries. Over the past eight years, Confucius Institutes have thrived into a place for learning the Chinese language and culture as well as a comprehensive cultural platform for Chinese and foreign educational exchanges. They have made significant contributions to deepening the friendship between China and the rest of the world, thereby endearing themselves to people across the world.
