On December 4, 1982, the Fifth Session of the Fifth National People's Congress adopted the Constitution of the People's Republic of China, which has been implemented ever since. Along with China's reform and opening-up as well as the socialist modernization drive, the current Constitution has been revised four times. It recognizes the achievements of the struggle made by the Chinese people of all ethnic groups, institutionalizes the fundamental system and missions of the state, stipulates the most important principles in the nation's life, and provides the guarantee for the citizens' freedom and rights. It is the fundamental law of the country as well as the basic guideline for running the state and ensuring social stability. The experience of the past three decades has proved that the Constitution of the PRC is a good constitution which suits the country's reality and has played a tremendous role in the country's economic, political, cultural and social life.
