|Hybrid rice is any genealogy of rice displaying heterosis produced by cross-breeding two rice varieties that are genetically different but mutually complementary in advantages. In 1964, Yuan Longping, a Chinese agriculturalist hailed as “Father of Hybrid Rice,” led a team and pioneered in China in the research and development of a better rice breed. In the 1970s, a type of hybrid rice was successfully developed and introduced into extensive cultivation. This marked a major breakthrough in rice breeding technology, significantly increased rice production, and has played an important role in solving the grain shortage problem in China and even the world. At the beginning of the 1990s, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations recommended the promotion of hybrid rice as a priority strategic measure to solve the problem of food shortage in developing countries. So far, more than 40 countries have been involved in the introduction, research, and promotion of hybrid rice. |
