At noon on May 8, the first China-Europe Railway Express (Urumqi) block train for mail transportation departed China from Horgos railway port under the supervision of customs, marking the establishment of a comprehensive logistics network with railway, highway and air transportation of mail in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.
The train carried 1038 bags (weighing a total of 17 tonnes) of cross-border e-commerce parcels, primarily containing clothing, electronic products and daily necessities, and transported them to Burunday station in Kazakhstan within approximately 2 to 3 days. Subsequently, the mail items were distributed to over 20 European countries.
To ensure the time limit of the international mail and meet user demands, the Customs tailored a supervision plan for mail transportation via the China-Europe Railway Express (Urumqi) accordingly, enabling the resource complementarity between railway transport and air and highway transport through the integrated advantages of coordinated development of Urumqi’s land and air ports.
The routes of block trains opened previously could only carry a limited number of international mail items destined for Kyrgyzstan and other Central Asian countries. After the launch of the China-Europe Railway Express (Urumqi) block train dedicated to mail transportation, it is expected to transport an average of 30 tonnes of mail per month.
