  • Audit of China2012-32

National audit is an integral part for state governance. The history of China's auditing system can be traced back to the Xia and Shang dynasties (21st-11th Century B.C.). During the Western Zhou Dynasty (11th Century-771 B.C.), the official position called Sikuai was established to administer and examine national accounting, while Zaifu was established for supervision over the financial revenues and expenditures of all high-ranking officials. In the following centuries spanning the Spring and Autumn Period, Warring States Period, Qin, and Han dynasties, a system called Shangji was implemented to intensify governmental supervision over the officials. From the Sui to the early Tang, Bibu was designated for central government as the institution specializing in audit, while both the central and local governments had created "supervisory officer" posts to evaluate administrative efficiency and carry out financial audit. The Royal Audit Court established during the Southern Song (1127-1279) was ancient China's first institution to be officially named with the formal use of the term "audit." During the Yuan (1279-1368), Ming (1368-1644), and Qing (1644-1911) periods, the duties of auditing supervision were primarily performed by kedao, an official post in supervisory organs.

  • Chinese Ceramics — Dehua Porcelain...2012-28

Dehua Kiln, in Fujian Province, was one of China’s major folk kilns in ancient times. Historically, it enjoyed worldwide fame for its white porcelain making, which culminated during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The White-Glazed Three-Legged Ding with Dragon Designs and Double Handles, modeled after prehistoric bronze ware, is a round ding resting on three legs with a pair of ears (handles) at the edge of its straight mouth. The embossed double strings on its belly sandwich six groups of engraved dragon designs, and its crystal and transparent white glaze, with a slight tinge of yellow, makes it a typical representative of “ivory white” porcelain of Dehua Kiln. The White-Glazed Zun with Elephant-Headed Handles and String Patterns features a straight mouth, square opening, round belly, and a pair of elephant-headed handles flanking its thick neck. With a chic design and milky, translucent glaze as smooth as cream, the zun represents the pinnacle of white glaze techniques of the Ming Dynasty.

  • Ci of the Song Dynasty...2012-23

Following the Tang Dynasty (618-907) poetry, ci, a kind of classical Chinese poetry, of the Song Dynasty (960-1279) marked a new pinnacle in Chinese literary history. Huanxisha, a representative work by the renowned poet Yan Shu, expresses the sentiment about spring time, containing the reflection of life. The whole poem reiterates the same topic by clinging to the new and the old, the gone and the coming, and the changing and the unchanging. The weather, the pool, the pavilion and the sunset do not change, but today's returning swallows are possibly not those last year. In the circulation and repetition, some alternation of the new and the old unnoticeably takes place, which makes the adopted persona feel melancholy. The two lines starting with "helplessly" regret the past with the first line, and greet the new with the second. They contain a little subtle sentiment within joyance, full of poetry and speculation, and are thus famous lines which have been recited through generations.

  • Qin Slips from Liye2012-25

The Qin slips from Liye are official archives of the government of Qianling County in Dongting Prefecture, ruled by the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC). In June 2002, some 37,000 slips were unearthed from the ruins of Liye Ancient Town in Longshan County, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan Province. All bearing characters written by writing brushes, they are mostly government decrees and documents, covering many aspects from household registration to land reclamation and agricultural taxation, including contents that had not been previously recorded in historical documents. A 23cm x 4.5cm wooden slip was found to carry the multiplication table as well as characters on both sides. The earliest calculation table ever found in China, it is of great value to the study of Chinese history of arithmetic. The slip inscription on the Qin Calendar is an official letter from the government of Yangling County to Dongting Prefecture, providing significant information for the study and restoration of the calendar and astronomy during the centuries spanning the Warring States Period (475-221 BC) to the Qin and Han (206 BC-AD 220) dynasties.
