China Post will issue a set of one commemorative stamp featuring the International Day of Older Persons with a denomination of 1.2 yuan (0.1748 U.S. dollars) on October 1, 2018.

The aging of the population is a prominent social problem in the world today. In order to raise international awareness of this issue, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in December 1990 to designate October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons starting in 1991. October 1, 2018 is the twenty-eighth International Day of Older Persons.

China is one of the countries with a high degree of population ageing in the world. The joint efforts of the whole society are needed to cope with this problem, improve the quality of life, and safeguard the dignity and rights of the elderly.

This set of stamps was designed using a centrosymmetric composition and represents five principles that are closely related to the elderly through five scenes. The central part of the picture shows a cartoon rendition of an elderly couple. The scene reflects the principle of independence of the elderly.

The traditional Chinese decorative patterns around the picture convey good wishes to the elderly for their happiness, longevity, safety and health.

The pictures in the four half-circles around the couple show senior citizens engaging in shadowboxing, gardening, rehabilitation and volunteering, embodying the principles of dignity, self-realization, care and participation of senior citizens.

The stamp uses red, which is an auspicious color in Chinese culture. The contrast between the red background and the blue foreground increases the visual impact of the stamp.

This set of stamps was designed by Liu Zhao and Zhang Fan, and was printed by the Beijing Stamp Printing House.
