China Post is to issue a set of one commemorative stamp to mark the centennial of the Ocean University of China (hereinafter referred to as OUC). The stamp is entitled The 100th Anniversary of the Ocean University of China. The denomination of the whole set is 1.20 yuan, and 6.15 million sets are planned to be circulated.
Established in 1924, OUC is a key comprehensive research-oriented university with distinct revolutionary genes and traditions, and persistent dreams of exploring oceans. It has gone through several stages in its history, including the Private Qingdao University, National Qingdao University, National Shandong University, Shandong University. In 1959, it was named Shandong College of Oceanography, renamed Ocean University of Qingdao in 1988, and approved of the present name Ocean University of China in 2002. OUC was included in the country’s Project 985 (China’s top 39 universities) and Project 211 (China’s top 100 universities). In 2017, it was included in China’s plan of building world-class universities and academic programs (Class A). In the last 100 years, OUC has always been adhering to its aim of cultivating innovative and well-rounded talent with a strong sense of responsibility, international vision and good knowledge in sciences and humanities. It has been pursuing the values of giving priority to academics and sparing no efforts to make China stronger by further developing the ocean. Taking building a strong marine-based country as its special mission, OUC has been standing firm at the forefront, forging ahead, and making its contributions to building China into a leading country in education and a strong maritime country. The stamp mainly features the old gate and the June 2 Teaching Building on Yushan campus, complete with elements such as the emblem of OUC, and its centennial logo. With fresh and elegant design and rich visual connotation, the stamp demonstrates the distinctive style of OUC. The stamp is printed with high-precision offset technology, highlighting the profound and glorious history of OUC by embellishing the main building and the school emblem with gold ink. The border ornament of the stamp takes the design of OUC’s centennial logo as the color mark. And fluorescent ink is used in printing the background of the stamp, making the figure “100”, OUC’s motto “海纳百川,取则行远” (Ocean embraces all streams; exploring promises reaching far.) and its plaque at the gate dazzling under sunlight, and spectacular under ultraviolet light, thus presenting the brilliance of the century-old university onto the stamp. The stamp is designed by Chen Jingyi and Xia Jingqiu, edited by Li Jinwei, and printed by Beijing Stamp Printing House Company Limited with offset technology. The stamp will be available for six months at designated postal outlets nationwide, online mall of China Philately (https://jiyou.11185.cn), the mobile app of China Post, the WeChat Mall for philatelic products in the official WeChat account and the WeChat mini program of China Post Group.
